    Marvin Beal

    * Beal attended East High School in Akron and participated in three sports.

    He attended West Virginia Tech on a basketball scholarship and later transferred to the University of Akron where he played baseball for four years, graduating in 1968. During his sophomore year he was selected as Akron's “Best Pitcher" and in the summer coached many of the Akron University players in the “AA” league under Azar-Denholm.

    Barberton hired Beal to teach in 1968 and he has taught and coached for the last 26 years. During his career he has coached football, basketball, volleyball, wrestling and track at Decker, Portage, U.L. Light and Highland and was swimming coach for one year at BHS.

    In 1972, Beal was hired as head baseball coach at Barberton High School and held this position for the next 19 years. Under Beal the Magics won 9 Sectional Championships, 4 District Championships, one Regional and one trip to Columbus in 1986. The Magics won the N.E.O. Championship in 1974 and in 1987 their first year in the Metro they were co-champs.

    As head baseball coach the teams Beal coached accumulated 254 wins, a school record that was previously held by Les Scarr. Beal was presented the “Dick Shine Award” three times by the Diamond Conference in 1976, 1977, 1979 and was named Metro Coach of the year in 1987.
