    Mike Jones

    * Mike Jones is a 1979 graduate of Barberton High School where he participated in both football and baseball. He was a defensive tackle on Coach Rudy Sharkey’s great teams of 1976, 1977, and 1978. Mike was a three year letterman and starter.The 1977 season resulted in an 8-2 record with a signature win over Massillon in the Akron Rubber Bowl. This was the ?rst Magics team to beat Massillon since 1947. The 1978 Squad ?nished the season with a 9-1 record defeating teams from Cleveland, Columbus, Toledo, Cincinnati and Canton. The only loss that year came from nationally ranked Detroit-Brother Rice. The 1978 Magics’ Defense posted 5 shut-outs and only gave up 4.9 points per game to their A opponents.

    During his high school career, Mike earned Defensive Player of the Week six times for the Magics. As a sophomore, he was named as the Magics’ Best Defensive Lineman and received honorable mention in the NEO Conference. A Co-Captain in 1978, Mike again was named as the Magics’ Best Defensive Lineman. He earned All-Summit County First Team and All District Second Team awards in 1978 earning a starting position in the City-County All Star Game. Football was not Mike’s only sport. He also started and lettered three years in baseball playing for Coach Marv Beal. The 1977 team was District Champions and Regional Runners-Up. For his efforts, Mike won the Magics’ Best Hitter Award and received All Diamond Conference honors. Jones repeated his All Diamond Conference Award in 1979 as the Magics were District Runner-Up. He was also named as the Magics’ MVP.

    Following graduation from BHS, Mike accepted a full athletic scholarship to play football at Eastern Michigan University where he lettered all four years. There he played for Coach Mike Stock and was named EMU’s Most Improved Defensive Player in 1980.

    A 1983 graduate of Eastem Michigan University, Mike completed his studies eaming a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. After graduation, Mike returned home to Barberton and assisted the Barberton Magics football team during the 1983-1984 seasons. He then accepted a position with the Federal Bureau of Prisons where he has spent his 27 year career. He is currently responsible for all elements of Security at the United States Federal Penitentiary in Atlanta, Georgia. Mike continues his involvement in sports by coaching youth baseball for the last 10 years. Mike cur- rently resides in Douglasville, Georgia with his wife, Sherry, and two children, Taylor and Jake.
